T V C PRO DU C TI O N “When we filmed Jerry in Melbourne, in a set, we couldn’t stop laughing, there was a lot of ‘shooshing’ on set cause we didn’t want fart noises and giggles,” says Douglas Turner. Theman with the golden hands Zealot Films director Robby Douglas Turner recalls how he got involved with the Dunlop Volleys ‘Exceptionally Average’ campaign via Marilyn and Sons IT ALL STARTED WITH AN EMAIL to Zealot Films from Kr ist an and Gavin, two very alluring and softly spoken young men f rom Marylyn and Sons. They thought I might be the “go to man” for a script they had cooked up with their colleges over some piss and bickies. I read the script and discovered that it was far from a verage and far from the usual derivative product pl acemen t for mulas , t hi s was unique. In short the guys wanted to know how I would go about directing a script which describes a man in a lounge playing fart tunes with his hands. The debate went something like this: Shit, it’s a fucking good idea, we can’t fuck it up. Na, na we won’t fuck it up…it’s too good to fuck up, the only way to fuck it up is to over cook it. Yep, let’s not over cook it, cool…cool, Ok, what about an actor doing the noises like this guy on YouTube, with his hands and we could over dub the fart noises? Shit the fart noises would MARCH /APRIL 2 008 Robby Douglas Turner: “I read the script and discovered it was far from average” have to be absolutely right, I mean they would have to have nuances, yeah, nuances and subtlety like sus- tain and pitch bending, skilled fart play like that….could it be done? You know, how would the actor look ? He wou ld have t o have expressions like he was in the note, the moment, making the sound, caressing it out of his hands…you know. Yer, like how do you get an actor to do that shit?...You direct them,...oh, right. But would it look real, would people pick it? Nup, done right it would be completely right,...oh. What if we got the guy off YouTube? We were pissing o ur- selves l aughing o ver t his c lip, we cou ldn’ t s peak, h e was pla ying Bohemian Rhaps ody wi th hi s f art hands FOR GOD’S SAKE! Could we get him? It would be absolutely legit if we did, then there is no scam, he is real, he is the master, he is the magic. Yeah, yeah, let’s see if we can get him…ok. So we got him. The boys f rom Marylyn and Sons flew o ver Je rry Phillips, t he g un shop owner f rom Mich igan, who plays t unes with h is h ands , f art noises f rom h is h ands, f rom h is hands, fart noises, and his wife, she came along to cause as luck had it his Australian wife had relatives on the Gold Coast who were having a birthday. There it was, he arrived. When we filmed Jer ry in Melbourne, in a se t, we c ouldn’t stop laughi ng, there was a lot of “shooshing” on set cause we didn’t want fart noises and giggles. It was laug hter that wouldn’t stop or answer to any reasonable request to shut up, it was cave man laughter, laughter from primitive man. So YES, he is real, we have com- plete tak es from start to finish in wide. Bruce Willis, Adam Sandler, they need 3D tricks and sound fix- ups, Jerry don’t. He had play back in his ears from miniature earplugs so he could f ollow the tun e, al l of which he hadn’t played before. We miked him f rom a boom and with radio neck mike under his shirt. He rehearsed a c ouple o f t imes t hen went at it like a crazy windmill. The play back music is mixed in later to give the feel. He’s real, have a look at the Can Can commercial for cinema. Oh a nd b y t he wa y, th e c lien t loved it. Let’s d o mor e anti adver- tising. Robby Douglas Turner is a director at Zealot Films, Melbourne.
