Campaign Brief Magazine : CBNAT NOV-DEC 2013
42 CAMPAIGNBRIEF NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013 TVC+CONTENT PRODUCTION THIEVESTOSYDNEY Thick as Thieves is a visual content company that represents a select group of celebrated, artistic film- makers with a focus on breaking new directors into commercials. In line with this commitment Thick as Thieves is now excited to represent young filmmakers from Australia & New Zealand across both markets. Says EP Nik Beachman: “We have long entertained the notion of opening in Sydney and finally we seem to be getting our act together. Thick as Thieves are a bunch of obsessive filmmakers. Dreamers and artists first and foremost, we love to inspire each other to do great work and push boundaries. We have had some really tangible success in translating directors from short film and documentary to commercial content.” With an eye to this translation acclaimed Melbourne filmmaker Auckland-based visual craft company Thick as Thieves is opening a Sydney office to extend its services to Australian agencies. Cannes, the Spikes and most recently LIA. Zoe is a former SPADA young filmmaker of the year in NZ and has also won best documentary feature at the NZ film awards for Lost In Wonderland. Unusually, Zoe is adept across drama and documentary formats, and has a strong eye for cinematic composition and lensing. Says Beachman: “Zoe is a maver- ick director who has never asked for permission to tell stories that res- onate with her, and her talent and passion are being recognised by agencies and clients.” Zoe’s latest documentary, Deadly Ponies Gang, was a smash hit in the recent NZ Film Festival. She has recently completed new work for Cadbury / DDB, Interislander / Y&R, and is currently shooting for Sky TV / DDB. Alex Sutherland has long pro- duced great comedy narrative work. Recent work includes a hilarious campaign for Saatchi & Saatchi NZ for Telecom NZ, utilising a regular guy endowed with giant hands inspired by a sequence from the The Science of Sleep by Michel Gondry. Sutherland cleverly augments vox- pop confrontations with carefully contrived performance sequences. Thick as Thieves also takes great pleasure in representing the work of iconic LA based H.S .I Productions in Australia and New Zealand. H.S.I represent the work of David LaChappele, Joseph Kahn, Simon Cole, and Michael Haussmann among others. H.S.I’s Simon Cole (a Brit based in LA) has just completed work on a funny new spot for Summer Beef for BMF Sydney. A one shot medi- tation on ‘Shrimp on the barbie’ featuring local funny-man Merrick Watts. Prior to this Cole has also shot a ‘very silly and sweet’ musical spot for Cadbury ‘Roses’ for DDB New Zealand. Says Beachman: “Simon is a won- derful comedy director with an enviable reel. His work for Axe, Coors, and Compare the Market is first rate but he really gets into Antipodean humour and what makes us tick, he’s also truly won- derful to work with - an irreverent rogue and a gentlemen.” Cole’s wish is to continue to circle between LA, London, Sydney and Auckland. Thick as Thieves has recently been working from Fox Studios but hope to announce a new office and partnerships soon. You can contact them on 02 8005 5807 or contact Nik Beachman: +64 21 280 1981. Or: firstname.lastname@example.org www.thickasthieves.com Christopher Frey has recently been recruited by Beachman for com- mercial representation in Australia & NZ. Chris’s visionary short film Explosions was a recent staff pick on Vimeo where it quickly eclipsed 100,000 views, capturing the atten- tion of Hollywood Studios in the process. Explosions has recently been awarded for best cinematogra- phy and best original music at the 24fps film festival in Austin, Texas. Says EP Nik Beachman, himself an awarded producer of short film content: “Explosions combines Christopher’s Kubrick-like cine- matic sensibility with atmospheric visual effects. It is all the more remarkable given Chris wrote, directed, designed and created almost all the VFX work himself, and even created the superb music. ” Christopher’s music clip work for bands such as Pappa vs Pretty is also first rate. With a back- ground in design and VFX he now turns his full attention to commer- cial narrative content. Zoe McIntosh continues her meteoric progress in commercials. Zoe won the Cannes Lions Young Director Award, broadcast non- Europe for her work on ‘Demand Equal Pay’ for DDB. This cam- paign has gone on to win at many prestigious shows including AMLC Beef - Simon Cole (BMF) Telecom NZ - Alex Sutherland (Saatchi & Saatchi) YWCA ‘Demand Equal Pay’ - Zoe McIntosh (DDB) Cadbury Roses - Simon Cole (DDB) Cadbury Dreams - Zoe McIntosh (DDB) ‘Explosions’ - Christopher Frey CBNAT NOV-DEC2013_MASTER_CB-FEBRUARY-2007 19/11/13 5:28 PM Page 42
