Campaign Brief Magazine : CBNAT SEPTEMBER 2013
RADIO CAMPAIGNBRIEF SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 Ralph van Dijk- President's log Eardrum Australia creative director Ralph van Dijk was the president of the Cannes Radio Lions jury this year. Here's his take on the week Hold That Tweet Past experience has taught me that mid way through the second day of Round 1 Cannes judging, we will all be convinced that it's the WORST year for radio EVER and the next park assist ad will drive us to violence. Thankfully, Day 3's shortlist bright- ens things up and we start to relax. Can I Trust You? Some jury-bonding early on is important. It helps to build trust for the business end of judging and guarantees you'll have spare beds in at least 14 countries. Pedal to The Metal I can be quite opinionated when it comes to judging radio creative, but not this week. My role as Jury President was more about facilitat- ing than participating. It nearly killed me. Eardrum had fifteen finalists so I became quite familiar with the cor- ridor. Australia Wins... again. Luckily none of the journos at the Press Conference remembered I was also on the jury back in '06, when another cute Australian song won the Cannes Radio Grand Prix. Coincidence? You be the judge. Cannes, meet Juan I began the week playing my jury a recording of a local taxi driver, who outlined his criteria for effective radio advertising. It worked a treat, so I tracked him down and introduced him to 2000 cynical creatives on awards night. Check out the ovation he received on the video at eardrum.com. 60th Anniversary Cannes Lions Jury Presidents Mum would be so proud. If only she knew what I did. Off Duty With judging duties behind me, and it was time to vote with my liver.
