The best examples of the pa st few y ears, The Chaser ’s War On Eve ryt hing and Summe r Heights High, came from comedians who had pol ish ed th eir cra ft on lesser p rojects ove r man y years . This makes the ABC’s Review With Myles Ba rlow all t he mor e remark- able. The re’s a confi dence t o i ts comic tone and timing th at comes only after years of trial and error. It is ed gy, origin al a nd ve ry, ve ry funny.” - Greg Hassall, editor of The Gui de, S ydney Mor ning H erald , 13/10/08. Review is described by Cou rtney Gibson, the ABC’s head of c ontent creation as an “existential infotain- ment program”. I t sees h ost Myles Barlow (Phil Lloy d) “r eview” vari- ous life experiences, such as paying for sex, murder, drug trafficking and stalking. In a deadpan parody of the movie review format, he gives each experience a mark out of five. According t o Gibson, the ke y to its success is its brutal authenticity. She gives the example of the paying for sex review, which she says is “as dark, dirty and bl eak as you imag- ine it’s going to be...it’s not affected and it’s n ot ch eesy”. According to Hassal, “ it is certainly as d eadpan and realistic as comedy gets.” 50 CAMP AI GN B RIEF Writer an d direct or Trent O’Donnell says “I was waiting for that call ‘You can’t say this and you can’t say this and this and this’, but it never came. “After the ABC’s recent comedy successes, they’ve been keen to keep pushing the boundaries.” 2008 was a g reat year for O’Don nel l, Jungleboys HQ’s inhouse director, as he also took a great leap forward in the commer- cial world - directing TVCs and branded entertainment for clients such as DDB Sydney, Clemenger BBDO, Publicis Mojo and 3 Drunk Monkeys. And keep an eye out in early 2009 for another ABC comedy series he directed called The Urban Monkey, starring Sam Simmons. Says Matt Eastwood, v ice chair- “The most warped, challenging comedy in years” - Greg Hassall, editor, The Guide, Sydney Morning Herald man and national creative di rector, DDB: “I ’ve worked with Trent man y, man y t imes now. And I guess the true measure of his talent is the fact that I keep coming back. He has a d eft hand with comedy and performance, but never sacri- fices the look. He neve r lets the budget get in the way of the idea, literally doing whatever it takes to make sure that the money ends up on the screen.” jungleboys.com.au NOV E MB ER/DE CE MB E R 2 0 08
