ABOUTTHESIRENAWARDS The SirenAwards promote and reward radio commercialswhich stand out from the crowd. The word ‘siren’ has two meanings. A siren is commonly known as a device for cutting through and attracting notice. But in Greek mythology the siren has an altogether more alluring and seductive meaning. It is the name given to the beautiful creatures who would lure sailors to them by the sweetness and complexity of their song. The Winners Thewinners of the 2008 Siren Awards were announced at a gala breakfast at The Point, Albert Park in Melbourne in May 2008. NOVA radio personalities Akmal, Cal and Ed hosted the breakfast. The Gold Siren Award winners scored a trip for two to Cannes to attend the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival in June 2008. The Siren winners and finalists were selected from over 500 entries. The Siren Awards are presented by Commercial RadioAustralia.Visit sirenawards.com.au to see photos from the day. The Finalists At the end of each round of the Siren Awards a winner is selected from each category (single, campaign and craft), and then an overall winner is selected from the single ad campaign creative categories. The overall winner is given the opportunity to judge the creative categories of the following round, and the craft winner is awarded the opportunity to judge the craft category in the following round. All winners and highly commended entries progress to the finals of the Siren Awards where a panel of expert judges nominate the overall (Silver) category winner in each of the single, campaign ad craft categories, and decide upon the Gold Siren Award winner. SINGLE When faced with a radio brief a creative has the opportunity to make an ad which both cuts through and attracts notice, as well as using creativity to engage the listener and draw them in. The Siren Awards are supported by both the advertising and radio industries and are designed to encourage creative excellence and provide important peer recognition for writing innovative creative for radio.
